I am confronted on a daily basis by patients in various degrees of stress.  Stress that comes from relationship challenges, maybe their health concerns.  There seem to be so many potential causes for that word “stress”.  None of which are generally considered to be beneficial to health.

Then there is the financial stress.  All too common in our society these days.  And this stress often contributes to hypertension, or high blood pressure.

According to WebMD, hypertension is the number 1 cause of heart attach death.  Not a statistic to mess around with, in my humble opinion.  Yet the primary causes of high blood pressure, i.e. obesity, sedentary habits, eating food with questionable nutritional content, etc. are increasingly ignored by the majority of people, even the majority of patients I see!  The levels of all these negative health factors are rising, even when we know we eat too much, of the wrong things, and don’t exercise nearly enough!

OK, we need some good news.  The first thing is that all of this is preventable.  With a little education, some common sense, and increased awareness, all of this can go away!  All it takes is some better choices.

When we go to the grocery store we are confronted with thousands of choices.  According to FMI, a food industry statistician, in 2010 there were 38,718 different item choices in the average supermarket.  And most of these do not contribute to any level of what we would call “good health”.  Foods are packaged to attract our attention, not on the basis of what is good nutritional content, but on the basis of what sells.

High blood pressure is preventable.  If we can make choices that feed our body good food and nutrition, we can lower our blood pressure and prevent heart attack and heart disease naturally, without potentially harmful drugs.

ACCTRIX: Living All Your Life

The subject of heart disease hits close to home with me. One of the most difficult memories I have was watching my grandfather weaken and die. He died of heart disease the year after I graduated from high school.

I remember traveling as a young kid to his house on the ocean in California and getting to use his pocketknife to perform “surgery” on the big kelp whips that were washed up onto the beach. He took me to see the Monarch butterflies clustering on the trees in Pacific Grove.

Then he rapidly deteriorated. That really sucked.

Cold Weather Increases My Risk of Heart Problems?

A few days ago I was doing some research and I came across a report about a large study concerning seasonally related heart attack risks.  Using data collected from hundreds of thousands of heart attacks documented in the National Registry of Myocardial Infarction, the study found that 53 percent more cases were reported in winter than in summer.  Additionally, it was noteworthy that a pattern of decreasing occurrence of cases from winter to fall to spring and then summer was found across gender, age and geographic area.

As a physician I found this pattern fascinating and I resolved to investigate this further.

Health experts agree that one of the factors involved in declining health in the winter is “seasonal affective disorder” or SAD, which becomes more common as the weather gets less inviting.  As people feel less buoyant and active, the likelihood of consuming “comfort food”, food that usually is less than stellar in the nutritious category, is much more common.  We spend more time indoors, closer to the refrigerator and often are much less likely to get outside and hike for a couple of miles like we would in good weather.
